Kasur city has a rich and ancient history that dates back centuries. According to legend, it was founded by Prince Kusha, the son of the Hindu deity Lord Rama, and named after him. Historically, the city gained prominence during the Mughal era, serving as an important administrative and cultural center. Later, it came under Sikh and then British colonial rule, each leaving its mark on the city’s architecture and governance. Kasur is most famously associated with the great Sufi poet and saint Baba Bulleh Shah, whose shrine continues to attract pilgrims and spiritual seekers. During the Mughal era, Kasur rose to prominence. It became an important administrative and military center, attracting Afghan and Mughal nobles. In the late 18th century, Kasur came under the control of the Sikh Empire led by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The Sikhs took control after several battles with Afghan rulers and local chieftains. Later, in the mid-19th century, the British annexed Punjab and incorporated Kasur into the British Indian Empire. Under British rule, Kasur saw developments in infrastructure, education, and trade. At the time of the Partition of India in 1947, Kasur was a Muslim-majority city and became part of Pakistan.
In 1794 two pathans, Nazim-ud-Din and Kutab-ud-Din again expelled the Sikhs from Kasur and re-established the pathan Rule until 1807 when at last Kutab-ud-Din was forced to give way before Ranjit Singh and retire to his territory at mandot beyond to Sutlej River. After the Sikhs the area was taken over by the British. Kasur’s claim to fame is because of Sufi Saint Hazrat Baba Bullay Shah known for his unmatchable poetry in Punjab. His shrine is situated in the center of Kasur City. There is also a joint check post at Ganda Singh, which was constructed in 1959 for holding joint flag hoisting ceremony. The flag hoisting ceremony takes place at evening daily, which is worth seeing.
